ABOUT OUR ROLES
The Alternatives Structuring Group (ASG) forms part of the Alternatives Product Strategy and Development (APSD) group within the client-facing AWM group. ASG focuses on developing & implementing tax-efficient products and supporting client engagement around tax efficiencies across AWM’s alternatives complex globally: specifically private equity, private credit, infrastructure and real estate funds, both closed and open-ended. ASG partners closely with AWM investment, fundraising and client relationship teams to deliver on this important strategy.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
The Alternatives Structuring Group(ASG) is seeking a Vice President in Tokyo to lead its Asia tax practice as Head of ASG for Asia. The candidate should have a strong background in Japan tax concepts, in particular those related to asset management and private fund structuring, and a working knowledge of tax concepts of other major Asia jurisdictions, e.g., Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, as well as the impacts of the OECD’s Global Minimum Tax in those regions. This role requires deep knowledge of partnership taxation, international tax, fund structure, and other tax / regulatory requirements specific to the asset management industry. The candidate will play a key role in supporting business growth and should be able to think creatively about planning strategies to mitigate tax leakage for funds and other clients. The key responsibilities include developing / implementing tax strategies to optimize the fund investors’ tax positions and advising on tax implications of new products and structures within AWM. The ability to quantitatively model various tax planning proposals/strategies in order to substantiate their after-tax benefit is a plus. In addition, the individual should have strong communication skills such that he/she is able to clearly and concisely explain tax benefits and concepts to AWM investment, fundraising, client relationship teams as well as other senior business leaders. The ASG team is currently based in New York and London.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 4-6 years of post-qualification experience working as a tax attorney, tax accountant or in-house tax practitioner with strong tax structuring experience and capabilities
- Deep Japan tax experience is required, working tax experience in other key jurisdictions is strongly preferred (e.g. Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, as well as the impacts of the OECD’s Global Minimum Tax in those regions)
- Preferred sector exposure is private markets funds (especially private equity, private credit and real assets products), although willing to speak to potential candidates with a background in broader asset management / financial services, or private client advisory
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Native level in Japanese language, with strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Strong quantitative, analytical & modeling skills preferred
- Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail
- Positive attitude and strong work ethic
- Strong academic credentials
- Ability to multi-task and meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced team environment
- Strong skills in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint and Word)
- Native Level Japanese, with strong written and verbal Englosh communication skills
